What Does a Christmas Light Hanging Service Include?
- What separates a professional hanging service from a handyman or DIY install
- What actually happens on installation day from start to finish
- Why mid-season maintenance matters more than most people expect
- What full-service means and whether it is worth the price difference
- What the team behind Holiday Expressions has built over 30 years in Louisville
When people search for a Christmas light hanging service, they usually mean one of two very different things. Some want someone to come hang the lights they already own. Others want the whole thing handled from start to finish. Design, lights, install, maintenance, takedown, storage. One phone call and it is done.
Those are not the same service and they do not cost the same. So before anything else it helps to know which one you are looking for. Because a lot of frustration in this industry comes from people who thought they were getting one thing and got the other.
Holiday Expressions offers full-service. Here is what that looks like in practice.
The Consultation Comes First
A professional service does not start with someone showing up with a ladder. It starts with a conversation about what you actually want.
We come out to the property, walk it with you, and talk through the options. How much of the roofline do you want lit? Are you thinking just the outline or do you want trees and shrubs wrapped too? What is the overall look you are going for?
This step matters because it is where the display gets designed rather than improvised on the spot. A crew that shows up without a plan makes decisions on the fly and the result usually looks like it. The consultation is how we make sure the finished product looks intentional. It is also how we make sure the price we quote is the price you pay. No surprises later.
What Installation Day Actually Looks Like
This is the part people are most curious about and least informed on. So here is what it actually looks like when Holiday Expressions shows up to install.
The crew arrives with everything needed. Commercial-grade LED lights, clips, extension cords rated for outdoor use. We do not borrow your outlet strips or ask you to dig extension cords out of the garage. The job time varies depending on the scope of your display, the size of your property, and the complexity of what we are installing. A simple roofline on a ranch home is a different job than a two-story house with trees to wrap and pathway lighting throughout the yard.
We work clean. When we leave the property looks finished, not like someone is mid-project. And we test everything before we go. Every strand, every connection. Nothing is worse than calling a company back the next morning because half the roofline is dark. We find those issues on site.
The team that does this work is the same team behind Hancock Landscape, co-founded by Todd and Jackie Hancock, operating in Louisville since 1996. They have completed thousands of outdoor projects in this market. That experience shows up in how jobs get run.

Here is something most companies do not mention upfront. Lights go out. Strands trip. Wind moves things. It happens. The question is what happens next.
With Holiday Expressions, if something goes out during the season, we respond. Our maintenance turnaround is typically within 48 hours. You call, we come fix it. No charge, no hassle. That is part of what you paid for.
With an install-only company or a handyman who hung your lights, you are on your own. Which means either getting on a ladder in December to figure out what went wrong or living with a dark section of roofline until January.
Clients notice the difference. Here is what Louisville homeowners and business owners have said about the Hancock team behind Holiday Expressions:
"Their process is professional and dependable. They completed our project on time and on budget. We would not hesitate to work with them again." — Ed Haines, Louisville
"They are always on time, respectful and the quality of their work speaks for itself. I refer everything to them." — Claire Schenk, Louisville Realtor
"They are a trustworthy, quality business and I feel like we got enormous value from working with them." — Lauren Chitwood
Takedown Is Not Your Problem Either
January is not a fun time to be on a ladder. It is cold. The holidays are over. And pulling clips out of frozen gutters is nobody's idea of a good morning.
With full-service, takedown is scheduled just like installation. We come back, pull everything down clean, inspect the lights for any damage, and prep them for storage. Your gutters are not going to have clips left in them until March. It happens more than people want to admit with DIY installs and one-person operations.
Takedown timing is based on your preference. Some clients want lights down right after New Year. Others run them through mid-January. We work around your schedule.
Storage Means You Start Fresh Every Year
After takedown everything goes into storage. Properly coiled, labeled, and ready for next season. When November comes back around you are not untangling a bin of strands that have been in a closet for ten months.
Storage is part of what makes a full-service relationship work year over year. It also means we know exactly what you have going into the next season. No guessing on quantities, no missing strands, no surprises on install day.
Full-Service vs Install-Only: What Is Actually Worth It
| What's Included | Full-Service | Install-Only |
|---|---|---|
| Design consultation | Yes | Sometimes |
| Commercial-grade lights provided | Yes | Sometimes |
| Professional installation | Yes | Yes |
| Mid-season maintenance | Yes, 48-hour response | No |
| Post-holiday takedown | Yes | No |
| Year-round storage | Yes | No |
Install-only is cheaper upfront. You pay for labor and materials. That is it. You handle everything else.
Full-service costs more but covers design, installation, 48-hour maintenance response, takedown, and storage. For a lot of people, especially those with properties where appearance really matters or schedules that do not leave time for December ladder calls, that is worth it.
For others, install-only makes total sense. We can work with that too. We just want the scope to be clear before anything starts. One Louisville client put it well after working with the Hancock team: the quality of the craftsmanship, the efficiency, ease of communication, even the clean-up went beyond expectations. That is the standard we bring to every job.
Why Holiday Expressions
Holiday Expressions is a division of Hancock Landscape, co-founded by Todd and Jackie Hancock in 1996. The same team that has completed thousands of outdoor projects in Louisville over 30 years runs every Christmas lighting install.
We have done large-scale commercial installations at the Louisville Zoo for Boo at the Zoo, an event enjoyed by thousands of Louisville families each year. We bring that same level of execution to residential and commercial properties across Louisville, Lexington, Punta Gorda, and Port Charlotte.
The majority of Hancock Landscape's business comes from referrals. That tells you something about how clients feel after the job is done. We are not trying to be the cheapest option in Louisville. We are trying to be the one people call back every year.
Ready to Get on the Schedule?
Prime installation windows fill up 2 to 3 weeks before Thanksgiving every year. Clients who reach out in summer get better dates and more time to plan the display properly. Request your free estimate and we will come out, walk the property with you, and give you a specific number.

Do I need to buy my own lights or do you provide them?
We provide commercial-grade LED lights as part of our full-service offering. LEDs use 75 to 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs according to the U.S. Department of Energy, so they are better for the electric bill and they hold up better through a Kentucky winter. If you have lights you already own and want to use, bring it up during the consultation.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the scope. A roofline-only install on a ranch home is a different job than a two-story home with trees to wrap and yard elements throughout. We give you a realistic time estimate during the consultation so installation day is not a surprise. What we can tell you is that when we leave, the job is done and tested.
What if something goes out mid-season?
With a full-service agreement, that is on us. We typically respond within 48 hours. You should not be on a ladder in December troubleshooting a strand. That is our job and it is built into the service.
When do you take the lights down?
Usually in January, with timing based on your preference. Some clients want them down right after New Year. Others run them a few more weeks. We schedule takedown the same way we schedule installation.
Do you serve areas outside Louisville?
Yes. We serve Louisville and Lexington in Kentucky and Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte in Southwest Florida. Same service, same standards across all four markets. If you are not sure whether we cover your specific area, just reach out.
